Visit from Berlin

Marcus Ulpius Felix

Marcus aka Russel1 from the German AFD board bashed a gladiator named Marcus Ulpius Felix. He’d send me the figure to take some pictures with him in the arena. First he had a fight as a murmillo. After that he tried to fight as a secutor.

XLIX. A Door Opens

Here is the final chapter of season 3. Again I used Tacitus as my source of information. Here’s what he wrote in book 15 of the Annals:

[15.57] Nero, meanwhile, remembering that Epicharis was in custody on the information of Volusius Proculus, and assuming that a woman’s frame must be unequal to the agony, ordered her to be torn on the rack. But neither the scourge nor fire, nor the fury of the men as they increased the torture that they might not be a woman’s scorn, overcame her positive denial of the charge. Thus the first day’s inquiry was futile. On the morrow, as she was being dragged back on a chair to the same torments (for with her limbs all dislocated she could not stand), she tied a band, which she had stript off her bosom, in a sort of noose to the arched back of the chair, put her neck in it, and then straining with the whole weight of her body, wrung out of her frame its little remaining breath. All the nobler was the example set by a freedwoman at such a crisis in screening strangers and those whom she hardly knew, when freeborn men, Roman knights, and senators, yet unscathed by torture, betrayed, every one, his dearest kinsfolk.

XLVIII. Road to Ostia

This chapter was really a lot of work. 9 pages, many pictures, a big location, some photoshop work and a few f/x as well. Here are some “Making of” notes.

road to Ostia
For the opening scene I took an image of an Italian landscape and added two old Roman buildings to it. These buildings are cork models. The pictures were taken on my visit to Aschaffenburg in July. A second photo composition brought the group of our heroes into the picture.

road to Ostia
Then I used the background image for some close up shots by taking the pictures in front of my monitor.

road to Ostia
on page 210 we find another montage. I used again one of the models from the Aschaffenburg collection for it. To be true, this isn’t historically correct. It’s a Roman bridge, but the tower on it is a medieval addition.

road to Ostia
Then on page 211 I worked with a rear projection again using one of my Ostia Antica pictures for the background.

road to Ostia
After a little scene at Piso’s we come to the abandoned village. Well, this town close to Ostia is pure fiction of course. But we know, sometimes villages were given up. Sometimes malaria was the reason for it. Niobe refers to this. I didn’t want to do the chase scene in the country side. I thought a abandoned town would be much more suspenseful for it. I built the location on my living room floor using a lot of my Subura walls.

road to Ostia
For some pctures I worked with the rear projection technique and with more pictures of the cork models showing Roman ruins.

road to Ostia
For the move pictures I used some blur filters in Photoshop. For the flying axe I pined it on a shashlik stick and moved it a bit around while shooting the pics.

road to Ostia
I retouched the stick.

road to Ostia
For the axe in the head I used a second axe in which I cut out the shape of the forehead. Again I used derma-wax and movie blood to attach it to the poor assassins head.

road to Ostia
…and more movie blood

road to Ostia
for the arrows I used again some blur filters in Photoshop, some cropped arrows and a little movie blood.

road to Ostia
The last pictures with Aulus and Birdface were taken again in front of my monitor. Forgive me the mean cliffhanger.

XLVII. Natalis

The new chapter is online now. The three intro pictures are again a rear-projection, using my monitor in the background. The praetorian is a new one. Usually I take the same three praetorians again and again. After the little Cameo of Timo in chapter 45, the praetorian got a new head. I found it on ebay. I’m not sure, but I think it’s a Dragon head. Btw, this head was my first choice for the Thrasea part. That was before I found the Al Pacino head.

natalis

The chapter is about the interrogations of Natalis and Scaevinus. In a cross-cutting between the two interrogations we see that the statements don’t match. I like the cross-cutting very much in this chapter and how Tigellinus circuits around Natalis.
One of the dancing slave girls from chapter 42 got a little speaking part. It’s the Otaku Blonde by Triad Toys. The wine was of course photoshoped into the picture.

XLVI. The Transcript

The new chapter is online now. Most of the chapter takes place at the torture chamber. I used the dungeon walls, some wooden bars and a table to create the location. The head of Cassius the torurer is a custom head I once found on the Actionfigurado in Duiven. For the extra Vilius I took an Arnold head.

torture

The wounds are done with derma-wax and movie blood.

torture

And I did a little Photoshop work to give Epicharis the screaming mouth.

XLV. Scaevinus

The new chapter is online now.

XLV

The first scene takes place at the prefecture featuring the interrogation of Scaevinus. You may remember the Home Office diorama I showed here a coupe of weeks ago. When I was shooting this weeks scenes, the Timo figure was still here. So I gave him a little cameo.

XLV

Btw, today we celebrate page 200 of the Memento Mori comic.

XLIV. Hope

The new chapter is online now.

Prison Break

The first scene takes place in the dungeon location. We meet one new character here. It’s one more Prison Break head, Wentworth Miller as Michael Scofield.

Trejo

The second scene brings us back to the termopolio where we meet to friends of Agilis. For Titus I used a Loading Toy head. Manius is Danny Trejo a HeadPlay head.
